URL equals(Object) in Java

equals(Object): This method is available in the java.net.URL class of Java.

Syntax:

boolean java.net.URL.equals(Object obj)

This method takes one argument. This method compares this URL for equality with another object.

If the given object is not a URL then this method immediately returns false.

Two URL objects are equal if they have the same protocol, reference equivalent hosts, have the same port number on the host, and have the same file and fragment of the file.

Two hosts are considered equivalent if both hostnames can be resolved into the same IP addresses; else if either hostname can't be resolved, the host names must be equal without regard to the case; or both host names equal to null.

Since host comparison requires name resolution, this operation is blocking operation.

Note: The defined behavior for equals is known to be inconsistent with virtual hosting in HTTP.

Parameters: One parameter is required for this method.

obj: the URL to compare against.

Returns: true if the objects are the same; false otherwise.

Exceptions: NA

Approach

Java

package com.URL;

import java.net.MalformedURLException;
import java.net.URL;

public class URLequals {
    public static void main(String[] args) throws MalformedURLException {

        String protocol = "http", host = "localhost", file = "/hello";
        int port = 8089;
        URL url = new URL(protocol, host, port, file);

        System.out.println(url.equals(url));
    }
}

Output:

true
